DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois Tollway board of directors has approved higher speed limits on the Tri-State Tollway and other highways but not as high as a new state law allows.

The board approved raising speed limits to 60 or 65 mph on the Tri-State, the Reagan Memorial (Interstate 88) and the Veterans Memorial (I-355) tollways. The current speed limit is 55 mph on all three.

Republican state Sen. Jim Oberweis tells the Arlington Heights Daily Herald (https://bit.ly/191bpZ3 ) he believes the agency is flouting a law he sponsored setting 70 mph limits on tollways.

Oberweis says he has requested a Senate Transportation Committee hearing at which tollway officials will be asked to explain their actions.

Tollway Chairwoman Paula Wolff says the lower speed limits approved Thursday are safer.
