MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - City records show a few Mobile firefighters have been earning some serious overtime.

WKRG-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1zFtFgh ) five firefighters racked up overtime pay between $32,000 and nearly $49,000 apiece last year. That’s money they were paid on top of their base salary, which in Mobile averages about $35,000.

Records show the fire department’s big overtime earners were three district chiefs, a captain and a driver.

Mobile Public Safety Director Rich Landolt said he doesn’t think the amount of overtime being earned is unusual. He said many firefighters routinely volunteer for extra hours and the amount of overtime being paid to firefighters is down overall.

The average Mobile firefighter was paid $4,200 in overtime last year.
