KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Officials say a closer affiliation between Cheshire Medical Center and Dartmouth-Hitchcock will allow more patients in southwestern New Hampshire and southeastern Vermont to receive care closer to home.

Under an affiliation agreement that was finalized Monday, Cheshire Medical Center will remain a separate legal organization with its own board of trustees, management and employees but will further align its clinical, financial and administrative activities with the larger health system.

The agreement calls for strengthening Cheshire as a regional resource so more patients can be treated closer to home, which would then free up beds at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

Cheshire and Dartmouth-Hitchcock have worked together since 1998.
