PITTSBURGH (AP) - A western Pennsylvania man accused of kidnapping his 2-year-old daughter and taking her to Altoona has been barred from calling the girl while he awaits trial.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (https://bit.ly/1M5aVj9 ) reports that Allegheny County Judge Donna Jo McDaniel also ordered 32-year-old Ted Ortiz not to contact the girl’s grandmother.

Ortiz is scheduled to stand trial in May on charges of kidnapping, concealing the whereabouts of a child and custodial interference.

Officials say he was under house arrest in a Blair County drug case when he took his daughter to Altoona in December.

But defense attorney Amber Owens says her client didn’t know that interim custody had been awarded to the child’s grandmother three days earlier.

She called the situation “a very emotional, family-based issue.”
