NEW YORK (AP) - A 24-year-old man has been indicted on charges in connection with the 2013 fatal beating of a transgender woman in Manhattan

The Daily News (https://nydn.us/1FTH5K8 ) says James Dixon was arraigned Tuesday on manslaughter and assault charges. He pleaded not guilty and was held without bail. His lawyer declined comment.

The victim, 21-year-old Islan Nettles, was attacked in Harlem. Police say she and a friend, another transgendered woman, ran into a group of men who made anti-gay remarks.

Police say one of the men punched her in the face. She lapsed into a coma and later died.

Another man was initially arrested in the attack, but charges were dropped after prosecutors say Dixon turned himself in.

He’s due back in court March 19.
