ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - A fifth-grade student has won a penguin art contest that was part of an effort to welcome some of the Detroit Zoo’s new residents.

Organizers announced Monday that the girl is a student at Ottawa Elementary School in Macomb County’s Clinton Township, a Detroit suburb.

Comerica Bank and the zoo launched the contest in February. Children had their parents upload artwork for a chance to win a $1,000 grant for their school.

The winner and her class also will go on a trip to the zoo in Royal Oak to see new gentoo penguins and participate in a penguin keeper presentation.

The contest coincided with Comerica Bank’s $50,000 contribution for the zoo’s new $29.5 million Polk Penguin Conservation Center, which is scheduled to open in early 2016.
