SHIRLEY, N.Y. (AP) - An animal welfare group says a 3-foot reptile surrendered by a Long Island resident has been sent to an out-of-state sanctuary.

Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross said Monday that the caiman - a relative of the alligator and crocodile - is no longer residing in Shirley, New York.

Gross says the animals are illegal in New York state. Because the resident voluntarily surrendered the caiman, he will not be charged.

Gross says the reptile appeared to be healthy and no humans were hurt during the capture.

He says it’s the fifth alligator-type animal confiscated since May by the Suffolk Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
