NEW YORK (AP) - A union official who previously served in Boston’s government has been appointed chief of staff for New York City’s mayor.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the appointment of Thomas Snyder on Monday.

Snyder has spent nearly two decades with UNITE HERE - most recently as international vice president.

The union represents people in the U.S. and Canada who work in a number of industries. They include hotel, gaming, food service, airport, textile, manufacturing, distribution, laundry and transportation.

In Boston, his positions included administrative services director. This is his first post in New York.

He replaces Laura Santucci. She left the administration after leading Brooklyn’s failed bid to secure the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

Santucci accepted a new post at the World Food Organization, one of the United Nations’ aid organizations.
