SMYRNA, Ga. (AP) - Smyrna police have identified the officers who were involved in the fatal shooting of a man driving a Maserati in suburban Atlanta.

Department spokesman Chris Graeff said in a statement that Sgt. Kenneth Owens fired the shot that killed 23-year-old Nicholas Thomas Tuesday in the parking lot outside a Goodyear Tire store.

Authorities have said police were trying to serve Thomas with a warrant and he drove the vehicle toward the officers. Graeff says that he and officer Mark Cole were helping Sgt. Owens serve the warrant. Police say Owens has been with the department since September 2001 and oversees the department’s Street Crimes Unit.

Cobb County Police and the Smyrna Police Department’s internal affairs division are investigating the shooting.
