RADFORD, Va. (AP) - Radford University President Penelope W. Kyle plans to retire next year.

Kyle and Rector Michael Wray announced on Monday that her retirement is effective on June 30, 2016. The Board of Visitors approved Kyle’s plan to retire on Saturday.

She has served since 2005 and is Radford’s first female president.

Wray says in a news release that Kyle has been a strong advocate of the university. He says her efforts have resulted in unprecedented support in funding capital construction and renovation projects, along with introducing new degrees and programs.

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner says Radford’s academic programs, campus facilities and educational reputation have grown during Kyle’s tenure.

Wray says the board has begun planning for the search process to find a new president.
