DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Residents of Daufuskie Island are being asked their thoughts on incorporation.

The idea of incorporating the island near Hilton Head has been discussed for months. The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (https://bit.ly/1HeLHvx) that residents are now being asked to take an online survey gathering their opinions.

The Beaufort County island is accessible only by boat. The survey asks residents about environmental issues, garbage disposal, ferry service and other matters.

The newspaper reports the Daufuskie Island Council is hosting the survey and considering raising money to have Clemson University researchers study possible options for a system of town government.

The island may best be known as the setting of the Pat Conroy novel “The Water is Wide.”
