CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) - U.S. authorities say a convicted felon was sentenced to 2 ½ years in a U.S. Virgin Islands prison after arriving on a flight from Florida with 290 rounds of ammunition in his luggage.

The U.S. Justice Department says a judge sentenced Rudy Bridges on Monday at a district court on the U.S. Caribbean territory’s main island of St. Thomas.

Last year, Bridges pleaded guilty to possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspectors found a cache of bullets in the 31-year-old’s luggage when he came to the U.S. territory aboard a 2013 flight from Fort Lauderdale.

In 2006, Bridges was convicted in Georgia of carrying a concealed weapon and fleeing to avoid arrest. In 2009, he was convicted of a drug crime in Oklahoma.
