RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Maximum fines for carnival ride accidents similar to the one at the 2013 North Carolina State Fair that injured several people could go up by five or ten times in legislation that’s cleared the state House.

The measure approved unanimously Tuesday by the House also would increase the severity of criminal counts for operating amusement rides in an unlawful manner. The bill was filed in response to the State Fair accident, which resulted in riders on the Vortex being flung through the air. Three people were critically injured.

Some fines now could reach $10,000 for each day the ride is operated unlawfully. The measure also creates a new felony for violations causing serious injury or death.

The bill now heads to the Senate.
