MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama lawmakers are returning to Montgomery to begin addressing a number of major issues remaining this session.

The Alabama Legislature reconvenes Tuesday. Having already allowed charter schools for the first time in state history, lawmakers are heading toward a number of contentious topics including prison reform and how to balance the state budget.

Lawmakers will receive a draft General Fund budget Wednesday that will show the size of cuts to state departments if lawmakers don’t find new revenue.

On Thursday, the Alabama Senate could vote to pass major changes to sentencing and probation standards aimed at reducing prison crowding. Senators could also vote on an expansion of a state program that provides money for private school scholarships.

Senators could also vote to change how the state offers economic development incentives.
