LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A roving steer lost its bid for freedom because it turns out the University of Kentucky has a rodeo team.

The Lexington Herald-Leader (https://bit.ly/1xUnue8) reports the steer roamed on and near campus for more than an hour Tuesday before rodeo team member Adam Menker deployed his lasso training.

Animal and Food Sciences Department Chairman Richard said the animal had been on its way to be slaughtered when it hit a gate with a faulty latch and escaped.

But Menker, who is from Ohio, lassoed the animal and handlers held onto it.

Meanwhile, students came out to see the commotion, a truck driver stopped for a video and #UKsteer and @lexingtoncow took off on Twitter.

The university’s rodeo team is a student organization under the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.
