JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A House committee advanced a bill requesting a report on untested sexual assault kits after hearing public testimony supporting the effort.

House State Affairs on Tuesday moved a new version of Rep. Geran Tarr’s bill, which would direct the state Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement to produce a report on untested sexual assault kits by November.

The kits provide tools to collect DNA evidence after an individual reports a sexual assault.

A woman who said she was assaulted almost two years ago testified in support of the bill. She said evidence from her case has not yet been fully processed.

House State Affairs Chair Rep. Bob Lynn said he would work with Tarr on a possible audit of the state crime lab regarding its backlog of kits.
