RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - “The King of NASCAR” was in the House - and the Senate, and in the Executive Mansion to see North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory.

Seven-time racing series champion Richard Petty visited the state government complex in downtown Raleigh on Tuesday. The Randolph County native was showered with praise from lawmakers as he sat in the Senate and House galleries. McCrory and Petty also held a photo opportunity at the Executive Mansion, where the governor issued a proclamation for “Richard Petty Day.”

Petty also greeted people across the street from the Legislative Building, standing alongside one of his old race cars.

Petty is a former Randolph County commissioner who ran unsuccessfully for North Carolina secretary of state in 1996 as a Republican.
