VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - A Vicksburg teenager has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the 2011 fatal shooting of her stepmother.

The Vicksburg Post reports (https://bit.ly/1ywe4Ah ) that Tyla Vega, now 18, entered the guilty plea Monday before Circuit Judge Isadore Patrick. She had been set to go to trial again this week after jurors couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict last year.

Patrick set sentencing for May 1. Vega faces between 20 and 40 years in prison.

Vega was 14 when she was arrested.

Authorities say the body of 32-year-old Michelle Vega was found May 2, 2011, in the family home in Vicksburg. Authorities say neighbors reported seeing the girl drive away from the home minutes before her stepbrother returned and found his mother’s body.

The girl was arrested in Greenville six days later.
