DENVER (AP) - The USA Pro Challenge cycling race is adding three stages for women this summer.

Race organizers announced the change Tuesday in Breckenridge, where the Women’s USA Pro Challenge will begin Aug. 21 with an individual time trial. The Denver Post reports (https://dpo.st/1Ct33Ul ) Fort Collins and Golden will host stages the following two days.

The women will receive the same prize money as the men, the amount of which won’t be known until cycling’s governing body sets those figures closer to the event. The men’s race will begin Aug. 17 in Steamboat Springs and conclude Aug. 23 with a Golden to Denver stage.

Elite cyclist Mara Abbott fought back tears during Tuesday’s announcement, saying the decision to include women is “beyond all other things I could dream.”
