HOLBROOK, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a man locked up in the Navajo County jail in Holbrook is dead after being assaulted by another inmate.

Navajo County sheriff’s Chief Deputy James Molesa says surveillance video showed Jacob Vanderwalle assaulting David Kerman late Tuesday. He says the 24-year-old Vanderwalle told detention officers he had been in a fight with Kerman in one of the jail cells.

The officers responded and found the 26-year-old Kerman unconscious.

The Navajo County Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case. Molesa declined to comment on a possible motive.

Vanderwalle was awaiting trial on an attempted second-degree murder charge stemming from his time at the state prison in Winslow. Kerman was in custody for drug offenses involving minors in Navajo County.
