SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - The one-time boyfriend of a Cal State Fullerton student has been convicted of stabbing her to death 21 years ago.

Forty-three-year-old Samuel Lopez was found guilty Tuesday of first-degree murder. He faces 26 years to life in prison.

Prosecutors argued that Lopez killed 20-year-old Cathy Torrez in 1994 after she rejected his proposal to elope.

She was stabbed more than 70 times and her body left in a car trunk.

Lopez’s brother is charged with being an accessory after the fact and his cousin, Xavier Lopez, is awaiting a separate trial for the murder.

Lopez’s attorney, Lewis Rosenbaum, argued that no physical evidence tied his client to the killing and suggested that Xavier Lopez acted alone, possibly while trying to rob the woman.
