BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a dog has died after it fell through ice on the Barnegat Bay.

The pit bull was walking with its owner around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when it darted onto the ice and fell through the ice about 150 feet from shore in Berkeley Township.

The dog’s owner tried to pull it out of the ice, but the animal was trapped. Rescue crews soon arrived and, wearing ice suits and tethered to the shore, they broke up the ice in a bid to find the dog.

However, the animal’s body was found about 45 minutes later.
