CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada state Sen. Debbie Smith says she plans to return to the Legislature after having a brain tumor removed last month.

The 59-year-old Democrat says she’ll be back starting the week of April 6 and is excited to tackle education and economic issues.

Smith underwent surgery Feb. 6 at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and has missed the first month of the legislative session.

Her family said she has been closely following developments in the statehouse.

Smith was first elected to the state Assembly in 2000 and won a seat in the Senate in 2012. The Reno Democrat has won several lawmaker of the year awards and is the president of the National Conference of State Legislatures.
