SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Santa Fe County authorities say a 5-week-old infant boy remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition after allegedly being shaken by his 17-year-old father.

The Sheriff’s Office said the father was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of abuse of a child resulting in great bodily harm. The Associated Press does not normally identify suspects and defendants who are juveniles.

A Santa Fe hospital reported that the baby had suffered what was called “suspicious non-accidental trauma,” and the Sheriff’s Office said doctors at an Albuquerque hospital later told detectives that the child suffered injuries consistent with being shaken.

The Sheriff’s Office said detectives interviewed the father and that he told them he was overwhelmed with his son’s crying and his inability to get the infant to accept a feeding bottle.
