LOUSIVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Steve Beshear is warning residents to prepare for heavy snow, poor driving conditions, flooding and possible power outages caused by an approaching winter storm.

Weather forecasters say the heavy rain will turn to snow, sleet or freezing rain on Wednesday.

Some schools canceled classes due to the forecast. Officials say several roads have been closed in northeast Kentucky because of flooding on Wednesday. Crews are preparing to plow snow-covered roads throughout the state.

The National Weather Service says the winter storm could dump up to 12 inches of snow in areas around Louisville down to Elizabethtown and east to Frankfort and Lexington.

Campbellsville and Bowling Green are expected to get five to 10 inches beginning Wednesday and continuing into Thursday.
