SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A snowboarder has died after being swept up in an avalanche in northern Utah.

The U.S. Forest Service’s Utah Avalanche Center says the avalanche occurred in the Hells Canyon areas beyond the boundary of the Snowbasin ski resort. The Center says the snowboarder was with another person when he triggered the avalanche.

The Center says he was carried down the narrow gully and buried about 3 feet deep. He was not wearing a rescue beacon. He was eventually found by an avalanche search dog.

His name is not being released yet.

Evelyn Lees, backcountry forecaster for the Avalanche Center, says this is the first avalanche death of the 2014-15 ski season in Utah.
