MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Authorities have fired a state trooper who investigated a wreck where the driver left her car after the crash and froze to death in a nearby tree stand.

Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Sherri Iacobelli says Lance Cpl. R.W. Batchelor failed to follow the Highway Patrol’s procedures in investigating the wreck in Loris and lied about what he did after he found the empty car on Feb. 19.

The coroner’s office says 24-year-old Stephanie Callahan’s body was found three days later in a tree stand. Her family filed a missing person report a day after the crash.

Iacobelli says the trooper didn’t try to contact the owner of the vehicle or family members at the address where it was registered, didn’t email his supervisor and didn’t notify local law enforcement.
