GALAX, Va. (AP) - A house fire in southwest Virginia has left two children dead and a sibling with serious injuries.

Virginia State Police say the fire occurred Thursday morning in Galax (GAY’-laks). State police say the surviving child, a 9-month-old boy, has life-threatening injuries and is being treated at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The remains of a 7-year-old boy were found in the residence. His 4-year-old sister was recovered from the house but later died at Twin County Community Hospital.

The children’s mother survived the fire uninjured. The names of the victims have not been released.

Before fire crews arrived, neighbors tried to break windows to get to the family inside.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
