BALTIMORE (AP) - As inches of snow accumulate on streets and sidewalks across Maryland, officials say some jurisdictions are running low on salt.

Anne Arundel County officials say they are operating at just a quarter of their normal salt supply. And transportation officials in Baltimore say they currently have 2,500 tons of salt on hand, but typically like to go into any winter storm with at least 10,000 tons available.

Department of Transportation Director William Johnson said Thursday that Baltimore has been “judicious and strategic” with salt application throughout the city, but that the state and Montgomery County have promised to provide 7,000 additional tons of salt. Crews will begin hauling the salt into the city at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Johnson says crews will work overnight to treat all the city’s roads.
