PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Portland, Maine, officials say a Miami developer can build a large residential and retail complex if it adjusts the project design.

The Portland Press Herald (https://bit.ly/1B6fmVK ) reports The Federated Companies wants to build three six-story buildings with 445 apartments on 3.5 acres outside of downtown. The project would also have an 800-space parking garage and retail space in all four structures. The development would redefine an area of the city mostly known for rail yards and warehouses.

The city’s Planning Board has issues with the appearance of the project’s largest building and the exterior material used on the ground floor of another. A representative for the developer says the company will return with a new design as soon as possible.

The new design is needed before construction can begin.
