ELGIN, S.C. (AP) - Kershaw County deputies have charged a 68-year-old man with murder after he shot and killed his son as he tried to kick him out of his house in Elgin.

Sheriff Jim Matthews said the son pulled a knife on Earl Wood Sr. early Thursday and the father shot him in the arm.

Matthews says 26-year-old Stephen Earl Wood Jr. left the home, but came back a few minutes later and told his father he would have to kill him since he had shot him once.

The sheriff says Earl Wood then shot his son in the chest in front of his wife and small children.

Matthews says the father was charged with murder after his deputies spoke to prosecutors.

It wasn’t known if Earl Wood had a lawyer.
