FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Few drivers are braving the roads of northern Virginia’s Fairfax County as conditions deteriorate amid heavy snow.

Plows were working all over the county at midday Thursday, but they struggled to keep up with the snowfall. With schools, government buildings and daycare centers closed, traffic was all but nonexistent in suburban communities.

Some people are venturing out, mostly just to get out of the house. Neil Murphy and his 4-year-old son were the first customers of the day at a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant in Fairfax. Murphy says he likes the snow because he enjoys skiing and hopes to make one more ski trip this season. He says he assumes this storm is winter’s last hurrah and the next time he shovels his driveway will be his last.
