NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - A fire has destroyed the main building of the landmark Schartner Farms in southern Rhode Island.

Firefighters from several towns responded to the blaze off Route 2 in North Kingstown near the Exeter line at about 5 a.m. Thursday. The fire took several hours to get under control. No one was injured.

North Kingstown Fire Chief Fenwick Gardiner Jr. says officials are investigating, but the fire doesn’t appear to be suspicious.

The 150-acre farm was founded in 1902 and sells plants, flowers, fresh produce and a host of other food items including pies, cheeses and jams.

The farm’s Facebook page says the main building will be rebuilt and workers will continue planting for the spring.
