GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - An annual festival of laughter in western Michigan has fallen short its attempt to set a record for the most people wearing paper crowns.

The opening night event for Gilda’s LaughFest took place on Thursday at Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids and included free entertainment.

Organizers say they set out to top the current Guinness World Record of 1,324 participants in India last July. They say they could only get 489 people at the Grand Rapids event.

Record-setting attempts are a LaughFest tradition. Past events have included people wearing sunglasses in the dark, fake mustaches and chicken beaks as well as tossing rubber chickens.

LaughFest runs through March 15. The festival honors the memory of comedian Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989.
