BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - A Head Start program in Beaufort County has fired a driver and a bus monitor after two toddlers were left on a bus unattended for three hours.

Beaufort Jasper Head Start executive director Leroy Gilliard tells local media outlets that the two employees did not follow proper procedures for unloading the bus Monday.

Sheriff’s deputies say the two children - a 3-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy - were spotted playing outside the bus by a motorist almost three hours after the bus brought 27 other children to the Burton-Lobeco Head Start Center.

The children are again attending the Head Start program but neither has ridden the bus.
