TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey drivers will have to wait to learn whether a bill letting them use smartphones to show proof of auto insurance heads to Gov. Chris Christie’s desk.

The state Senate postponed Thursday’s vote because of the snow.

Under current law, drivers asked to show proof of insurance can offer only a paper copy. But the proposed legislation would permit either electronic or paper forms.

The measure also says that use of an electronic device does not mean the driver has consented to its search.

The Assembly has passed similar legislation.
