WOODBURY, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a New York City man has been struck by a vehicle and killed after bolting from a trooper who had pulled him over on the Thruway in the northern suburbs.

Police say a trooper pulled over a vehicle around 5 p.m. Wednesday in Interstate 87’s northbound lanes just north of Exit 16 in the Orange County town of Woodbury, 45 miles north of New York City.

Officials say the trooper attempted to take 37-year-old Bernell Wright of the Bronx into custody for suspected drug possession, but he began to resist arrest and ran into the northbound lanes, where he was hit by a passing vehicle driven by a New Jersey man.

The car overturned. The driver and his passenger weren’t injured.

The northbound lanes were closed for about four hours after the accident.
