RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina lawmakers are divided on whether corporate tax breaks sought by Gov. Pat McCrory will encourage job creation or amount to a multi-million-dollar giveaway.

The state House on Thursday approved legislation expanding the state’s main tax break offered to relocating companies. The measure also gives American Airlines almost $50 million in tax discounts in the next four years on jet fuel it buys at its Charlotte hub. The bill also widens tax breaks for electricity-hungry computer data centers, which are expansive to build but need few employees.

Supporters said the tax breaks are needed to attract new jobs and hold onto existing companies. Opponents said government was trying to favor some companies with benefits though there’s little evidence that incentives are decisive.
