CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - After months on the run, Shaggy the dog has been captured in the Grand Rapids area.

Kent County spokeswoman Lisa LaPlante says the Newfoundland was caught Thursday in Cascade Township. The dog had been wandering since July and is called Shaggy because of his rough appearance due to so much time outdoors.

Shaggy was caught by Melissa Borden of the Devoted Barn, an animal rescue group based in Monroe County. Borden says she and a homeowner in Cascade Township had been working to win the dog’s trust.

Shaggy will live at the Devoted Barn, 30 miles south of Detroit. Kent County animal control officers had taken extraordinary steps to try to catch the dog, even acquiring a device that shoots a net over an animal.
