SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A southern Utah man is facing charges in the attempted kidnapping of a high school girl at gunpoint.

Prosecutors filed kidnapping and drug possession charges Thursday against 39-year-old Earl B. Chappell of LaVerkin, who is accused of trying to force a Hurricane girl into his car.

Court documents say she saw the man following her on her way to school, and when she turned around he pulled out the gun. She screamed, ran away and told authorities, who put schools on lockdown briefly Wednesday.

Police Sgt. Brandon Buell says investigators don’t think the girl was targeted, but it’s unclear why Chappell tried to kidnap her.

No attorney was immediately listed for Chappell, who being held on $100,000 cash-only bond.

He is expected to make a first court appearance Thursday afternoon.
