PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say a special-needs child has been critically injured in southwest Phoenix after jumping from a moving school bus.

A Phoenix Fire Department spokesman says the 11-year-old boy suffered a significant head injury Thursday morning and was in extremely critical condition when he was taken to a pediatric trauma center.

Paramedics responded to an area near 91st Avenue and Broadway Road about 8:30 a.m. after receiving reports that a child was injured.

Phoenix police say the child was on the bus with a bus driver and the boy’s aide when he ran for the back door.

They say the aide was unable to stop the boy when he ran toward the back door as the bus was traveling at about 15 mph.

The name of the boy wasn’t immediately released.
