RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Department of Transportation says it has put crews and equipment in place for a sloppy serving of winter weather.

Rain, sleet and snow are forecast for portions of the state Thursday. Ahead of the weather, VDOT said crews staged equipment and loaded trucks with road-treatment materials. The mobilizing was expected to continue into early Thursday.

Because rain is expected to arrive first, VDOT said anti-icing pretreatment will not be done. Rain would wash it away.

VDOT asked motorists to monitor local weather forecasts for up-to-date conditions, and urged travelers to keep off the roads during the storm.
