VISALIA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say the personal handgun of an off-duty police officer accidentally discharged at her Central California home and hit a family member sleeping in the next room.

The Fresno Bee reports (https://bit.ly/1FdqkcR ) the victim, an adult woman, was hospitalized with wounds that were not life-threatening following the incident Monday in Visalia.

Police say it’s still unclear how and why the gun belonging to patrol officer Amerie Norman accidentally discharged.

A bullet went through a wall and hit the victim, who was in bed.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s Department was asked to investigate and report its findings to the Visalia Police Department.

Norman, a five-year veteran of the department, has been placed on administrative leave.

The victim’s name and how she is related to the officer were not released to protect her privacy.
