WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) - Westerly’s School Committee has dropped a proposed policy that would have required members to support committee decisions in public and discouraged them from using social media to discuss committee business.

Backers said the rule was intended to make the School Committee more effective.

But the Westerly Sun reports (https://bit.ly/1CAWYHS ) that solicitor William Nardone called the policy unnecessary and overreaching.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island had said the proposed policy raised “potentially serious First Amendment concerns” and asked that the committee reject or revise the proposal.
