WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - It will not be a typical spring break for 15 students from Winston-Salem State University.

A statement from the school says the students will be participating in an alternative spring break trip from March 8-14 by volunteering through Students Living with a Mission in Nashville and Camp Restore in New Orleans.

Sophomore marketing major Danny Johnson said he sees the trip as a way to pay back those who have helped him.

Hall director Melissa Brown said officials hope the experience will begin a tradition common at many other institutions that turns time off into a time of learning and sharing, Brown said the school wants students to experience diverse perspectives, learn about issues they can address in communities, and make serving part of their lives.
