EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - A Bothell man convicted of killing his estranged wife two years ago during a bitter divorce has been sentenced to about 28 1/2 years in prison.

The Seattle Times reports https://is.gd/45ggTI a Snohomish County Superior Court judge in February found 39-year-old Alan J. Smith guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Susann Smith. Court documents show she was killed in early February 2013, when the two were divorcing.

An autopsy found 37-year-old Susann Smith was struck more than 20 times in the face and head and then placed face-down in her home’s bathtub, where she drowned.

At the time of her death, she and Alan Smith were involved in a custody battle for their two young children, and Alan Smith feared she would take the children to her native Germany.

He was sentenced on Thursday.
