FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - A Buddhist priest has died in a fire that destroyed a Fort Smith temple.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/1DTkSJW ) reports that 68-year-old Souphonh Inthalanqsinh (soo-PAHN’ in-thah-LAHK’-shin) died in the fire that destroyed the Wat Lao Buddharam (waht low bood-hah-RAHM’) temple around midnight Thursday.

According to Fire Marshall Ronnie Rogers, the priest was found on the floor of a bedroom.

The temple’s spokesman said that the priest had been assigned to the temple since it was built in the early 1990s.

Rogers says that a passer-by saw the flames and called the fire department.

The temple was engulfed when firefighters arrived on the scene.The fire is currently being investigated by the Fort Smith Fire Department.
