DAVENPORT, Va. (AP) - A Virginia State Police team has recovered a vehicle and a deceased passenger in Buchanan County after the car was swept into the Russell Fork River.

Officials say a 2007 Chevrolet Impala was swept into the river shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday after driving through a flooded highway in the Davenport area.

The car’s driver was able to escape but the passenger was swept away with the vehicle.

After searching overnight, the rescue team located the vehicle, but the river’s swift current made it dangerous for the team to reach it.

When the team reached the vehicle shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday, 60-year-old Randy O’Quinn of Haysi was found dead inside.

The remains are being examined by the medical examiner’s office.
