WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) - Katherine Godwin, the wife of the late Virginia Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr., has died. She was 98.

Godwin died Thursday at her residence in Williamsburg, according to R.W. Baker & Company Funeral Home in Suffolk.

A former elementary school teacher, Godwin twice occupied the Executive Mansion in Richmond. Her husband was elected governor as a Democrat in 1965 and as a Republican in 1973. He died in 1999.

Katherine Godwin was a low-key first lady.

“I don’t make speeches,” Godwin said shortly after her husband began his first term, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “My husband is the public speaker in the family.”

The newspaper said Godwin was a model of strength, poise and dignity when the couple’s adopted daughter, Becky, 14, was killed by a lightning strike in Virginia Beach in 1968.

The Godwins received an outpouring of sympathy from thousands of Virginians.

“The love of the people is what pulled us through,” Katherine Godwin said.
