SOUTH LYON, Mich. (AP) - The mayor of an eastern Michigan city says he’s distraught about a man who died trying to save his life after getting caught in a rip current in the Caribbean Sea.

South Lyon Mayor Tedd Wallace was pulled under the water while bodyboarding in St. Croix on Sunday. The Detroit News reports Svenv Hill-Matson, a Danish tourist, jumped in the water and tried to rescue Wallace after hearing his cries for help. Wallace says Hill-Matson also got caught in the choppy waters and never resurfaced.

Wallace says the waves were so powerful they pulled off his wedding ring off his finger.

Bale Shbaka Kaza, a local businessman from one of the island’s larger cities, was able to pull Wallace to safety.

Wallace says he’s looking forward to hugging his family when he returns home.
